Why this blog isn’t perfect….

July 24th, 2006

What would you do if you could start your blog all over again?? I’m happy with a lot of things I did do, like having my own domain and using Wordpress. I would have liked to have been a little more familiar with php and the wordpress templates, it took me longer than I would have liked to get a sidebar up and working, for example. I would have put a sitemeter on from the beginning as well, just to see how far I had come traffic-wise.

The main thing that I would do differently now is to change my permalink structure - making it include the post name rather than the numerical id - for better search engine optimization. This is near impossible to do now, as all the old links would have to be redirected. I think in the grand scheme of mistakes, that’s a small thing though.

So, join the group writing project, share what you would change, it’s a help to those just starting out as well as a great way to meet new people in this project!

Thanks for dropping by my site! I love your blog’s and site’s layout and graphics. What a cool business idea, too. That’s the best thing about these group writing projects — finding other sites that you’d never have known about! :)

If I had to do it all over again, I would have started with WordPress and get my own domain. I’m in the process of doing that now. I also would have chosen a better blog name. I had no idea I was going to take it this far.

The site meter would have been there to begin with….. Oh well.

    Hey MommaDuck,

    I told you I’d be right over…
You must have Boy’s with all the Blue round here. :-)

This writing project is really leading me to a Whole Lot of Blogs I probably would have never found.

Glad to meet ya, and I’ll be back.

You’re not the only one wishing they knew WordPress templates better.. thankfully, though, WP has some pretty decent documentation..

Yea, im very glad that I had my permalink structure set up with the title of the post from the beginning.

I still need to do some work on my design though, every browser displays it differently, which is annoying.

Thanks for the comment, im adding you to my feedreader.

One thing I discovered last year about non-keyword post urls, whilst researching something for a client, was that Google News doesn’t accept keyword stuffed post addresses, only ones that are number/date related. I subscribe to a couple of news alerts for my blog and see some wierd info in their which is definitely coming from a blog and not a proper news site, so that might be worth 10 minutes of reading around on Google if you want to up your visitors.

Thank you for sending me to the problogger writing project. I joined too. I think your site is great, and I may steal some of your ideas - I like the categories in particular, also your little “plus” signs that expand the blogrolls. I must learn how to do this!!

I wrote my thoughts here, if you’re interested: http://kellycurtis.blogspot.com/2006/07/wordpress-and-typepad-and-blogger-oh.html

Thanks for stopping by MamaDuck. I read about your business somewhere (maybe it was the local paper - are you located in the Portland Oregon area?). Nice idea with the cards. I wished I had thought of that.

Looks like you’ve done the rounds on Darren’s first list, thanks for stopping by.

You’ve got a pretty sweet lookin blog right here, I think my wife would like to read some of this stuff too, I’ll pass a link onto her….

The permalink structure stuff, I’ve read some things on getting it across without messing with the indexing, in drupal it just gives it an alias and the node number still exists. I haven’t checked up on other platforms.

Heya, MommaDuck! I also appreciate you droppin’ by the homestead.

One thought on your permalink thing - since I’m just now realizing the importance of that myself - I think it may be possible without much mucking around.

WordPress should accept links in either the ?p=### format or the post-title-as-url format. What this means is that you should be able to change the way your permalinks work without breaking everyone’s bookmarks and such. I wouldn’t jump right out and do it, since I’m not 100% sure about this, but I may give it a try myself in the next few days. If I do, I’ll let you know my results. I’m hoping it’s literally as easy as flipping a switch.

    Rob Z.

    Hi,

thanks for dropping by. I feel really happy on reading ur comments. Yes I can’t start my blog all over again so I am directing it slowly to its goal by providing useful information to all the blogspot bloggers. I think in coming days i should be able to do justice to them.

    thanks again

    Jack
ps: your blog is very cute :)

I agree that using the post name in the permalink is a good idea. I did that from the start and it has been very good. Although, they make for a very long url, and not easy to just say, oh, visit my blog and read article 189, http://www.digitalthom.com/archives/189. But I guess there are give and take to both.

    Great blog.

Thanks for checking out my list, and for leaving a comment! As far as the permalink structure goes, with Wordpress you should still be able to change the structure and have the links work. Just a week or two ago I changed my structure from post # to site/category/postname , and all my old links (to post #) still work, as does my new permalink structure. It’s worth giving a try, right? Good luck! :-)

Good post. I too wished that I spent more time learning more about php, mySQL, css, etc.

I believe that although my permalink is the descriptive postname type, I can still access it via the post# (of course, I’d need to know the post id number).

And I agree with a previous comment that most of us wasn’t expecting our blog to be more than something small and that we weren’t going to keep continuing with it for as long as we have.

Thanks for checking out my contribution to this Group writing project.

  21. Comment by Renee on July 27, 2006 9:26 pm

    Hiya MamaDuck,

Lovely site you got here. You are doing so much better than many, so I won’t worry too much about the permalink structure. Word-of-mouth is Priceless!

And thanks for dropping by my blog.

    Cheers =p

Hopefully the storm of my blunder has passed, as I felt really dumb for not updating that post.

WOW you certainly did make it through everyone’s list on ProBlogger.

I’m not positive on this but I believe you can still change your permalinks to the title structure and because it edits the .htaccess file with rewrite rules the only links will still work (I believe that’s how it works anyway).

Thanks for the comment on my site as well.

Thx for dropping by my post as well. I was reading what you wrote and indexing by number, I would have never thought of that either!

Yeah your permalinks is really something to look at, it will target your ads better too. I wrote an article on it.

And good to see you really got most out of this problogger project! =)

My advice might be bad. It looks like you did do somewhat of a permalink structure but not a full title one so it might not work. I first thought you kept the default wordpress structure ?p=X

Thanks for the post, I changed the permalink structure on one of my wordpress blogs after having it for awhile from number, to date & title and it works fine, but that’s just me. It’s too much like math for me to think about a lot.
