My fiance and I had gone to a concert in Cincinatti, Ohio on Saturday (one of our long-time favorite bands- Over the Rhine). The band decided to do a special benfit concert on Sunday to help out a community church that was desperately trying to keep their doors open. We arrived late, just as they were getting ready to play their first song, because we couldn’t find the location. I heard the husband/pianist say that they had a special request. It was one of my absolute favorite songs “I want you to be my love”. I looked over and my fiance Jason was holding out a ring. He said that the special song was now ours and asked me to be his wife. After the song was over the band asked if anyone got engaged; we raised our hands and the church full of people clapped. It was very romantic…and to think we almost missed it because of faulty directions!
A trip for my fiance and I had been planned for Lake Tahoe, NV – or so I thought. He was planning all along to surprise me with a trip to Key West because I had been talking for months about vacationing somewhere warm. He showed me our boarding passes the night before our flight – completely surprised, I had to scramble around to try to find warm clothes and flip flops!
We arrived at the airport to fly to FL the next morning which was the start of a long & eventful trip. First, our plane broke and everyone had to deplane subsequently causing a 6 hour layover until the next available flight. The only flight available was to Miami, FL where we had to stay at the airport until we could catch the next morning flight to Key West, FL. At Miami International Airport we got chosen for the random full baggage search – luckily I didn’t see the ring! When we finally arrived in Key West, we found that our resort had cancelled our reservations because we missed our Friday check in. Fortunately, my fiance had called ahead and told them we wouldn’t be there until Saturday – so as a compensation, they offered us a $100 resort credit, upgraded ocean balcony room and free lunch! He had been planning to propose Friday night, but since we were stuck in a dingy Miami Airport hotel room he contacted the Key West resort concierge who made arrangements for Saturday night instead.
He told me that he had made dinner reservations at the hotel restaurant (poolside). We made our way down to the beach and walked out on the pier overtop of the Atlantic Ocean to enjoy the scenery. The sunset was amazing – the sky was orange, pink, red and yellow. As I turned around and started walking back toward the pool area I noticed a table for two in the middle of the pier. Quickly, I realized that was our table and he invited me to sit down for dinner. Shortly after sitting down, he got down on one knee, pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him. It was such a beautiful setting and I was so surprised! Champagne was brought to the table, courtesy of his parents who had prearranged its delivery and we enjoyed a fantastic dinner together as a newly engaged couple!
Despite our travel woes we definitely had a memorable trip and I wouldn’t change any of it! We will always have a good story to tell!
