Put hot glue on the small end of a jelly bean or hot tamale candy, stick it into the hole of a lifesaver, now fill the bottom of the hole of the lifesaver with glue add another lifesaver standing on it’s side. Now you have a pacifier! Add a ribbon through the hole of the standing lifesaver to make a necklace or bracelet.

Now when anyone says “baby” during the shower, someone will catch them and take their pacifier. The one with the most pacifiers at the end of the game wins the prize!

Being a very musical family (Mama Duck has a degree in music performance and Daddy Duck is also very musical), Lil Duck naturally has an interest in creating music. Since Mama Duck used to teach piano to young students, she is well versed in the training of young musical ears and highly recommends the Kindermusik program. If you are thinking your child doesn’t have such “musical genes”, please encourage their musical abilities and interest if for no other reason than mental development and personal enjoyment. Plus we don’t know what hidden talents our children have until those areas are encouraged and allowed to develop.

For Babies (0 to 18 months)

Rock-a-bye: This way or that way?
When your child cries, she’s saying, “My body is under stress. This is a really big emotion, and I don’t know what to do with it.”
Stay calm, tend to the basic needs, then see what soothes your child. Some babies simply know they need more help calming down. They need to be held closer, longer. Some children need to see your face only. Some need you to dim the lights or sing more softly.
Try a few different things and see how your baby responds best. At that point, you both can get the best benefits from a lullaby.

• Sing to your baby. She needs to hear your voice.
• Use an “oo” vowel to sing a tune to your child. Notice your own tongue and jaw relax too.
• Snuggle her close to your chest while rocking in a rocking chair.
• Stand and sway side to side.
• Try rocking so your child can see your face. The human face is of great interest to babies. Being in position to focus on mom’s or dad’s face helps a child feel calm and secure.
• A highly sensitive child needs a little protection from being overwhelmed. Dim the lights. Sing softly.

Bringing a newborn into the home is exciting, but it can also be a major upset for the family dog, especially if he’s used to free reign in the house. Fortunately, Canine behavior specialist Kelly Beasley of Camp Bow Wow can provide dog owners with easy tips and tutorials for getting Fido on his best baby-ready behavior:

• Bring your furry friend to the vet for a check up and vaccination update.
• Nip bad behavior in the bud. Visit an animal behavior specialist to make sure your pal knows how to mind his manners!
• Bring on the crying! Get Fido used to hearing baby noises months ahead by playing recordings and turning on baby gear like bouncers and swings.
• Get into a routine. Although junior may not arrive for another few weeks, get your furry sidekick used to baby activities to make the transition easier. A great tip is to carry around a toy doll and use the stroller on your afternoon walks.
• Make sure your furry pal does not get lost in the shuffle when you arrive home from the hospital. Greet him with a warm and calm welcome before introducing him to the newcomer.
• Lastly, don’t forget about your furry friend when creating your birthing plan. Make sure Fido has a place to stay, like Camp Bow Wow, which provides your pup with a friendly and warm home away from home. Camp Bow Wow also makes a great reprieve for overtired new parents.
