Tasty Scalloped Tomatoes with Cheese

4 slices toast
1 can (16-oz.) stewed tomatoes – or plain if desired
1 small onion, or less, grated
1 T. sugar (or less)
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/4 cup melted butter
1/4 cup grated cheese

Cut three slices of toast into cubes and one slice into triangles for topping. Mix tomatoes, grated onion, sugar, salt and pepper. Put in casserole in layers of cubed toast and tomato mixture. Arrange toast triangles on top; pour butter over them and sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes.
