Irish Blessings for Babies

These Irish blessings for babies are beautiful no matter how you use them!  You can speak these aloud at your baby’s events or display them on your Irish birth announcements, a plaque on the nursery wall, or on your baby’s Christening invitation.

For newborns: 

1.  May all the blessing of our Lord touch your life today.
May He send His little angels to protect you on your way.
Such a wee little fit, sent from above.
Someone so precious to cherish and love.
May sunshine and moonbeams dance over you head
As you quietly slumber in your bed.
May good luck be with you wherever you go.
And your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow.

2.  May strong arms hold you,
caring hearts tend you,
and may love await you at every step.

3. May you always walk in sunshine.
May you never want for more.
May Irish angels rest their wings
beside your nursery door.
And for the proud parents:
May God grant you
a wee bit of heaven
to cradle in your arms -
a sweet bonny baby
to hold close to your heart
A newborn babe
brings light to the house
warmth to the hearth
and joy to the soul
for wealth is family
family is wealth.

If you have less room or time for a blessing, the last several lines of the one above are especially beautiful all by themselves:

4.  Sleep, my babe, lie still and slumber,
All through the night
Guardian angels God will lend thee,

‘Tis not I who guards thee only,

Night’s dark shades will soon be over,

For a christening:

1. Dearest Father in Heaven,
Bless this child and bless this day
Of new beginnings.
Smile upon this child
And surround this child, Lord,
With the soft mantle of your love.
Teach this child to follow in your footsteps,
And to live life in the ways of
Love, faith, hope and charity.

2. May God grant you many years to live
For sure He must be knowing
The Earth has angels all too few
And Heaven is overflowing

3.  May you always have
A sunbeam to warm you
Good luck to charm you
And a sheltering angel
So nothing can harm you
Laughter to cheer you
Faithful friends near you
And whenever you pray
Heaven to hear you

For twins, triplets, or more!

O Thou, to whom to love and be are one,
hear my faith cry for them who are more
thine than mine.
Give each of them what is best for each.
I cannot tell what it is.
But Thou knowest.
I only ask Thou love them and keep them
With the loving and keeping Thou didst
Show to Mary’s Son and Thine.
