How to make a Watermelon Basket

June 11th, 2007

Lay a watermelon length-wise on the table and slice off the top third. With a melon baller, scoop as many watermelon balls as possible until you are left with about a 1-1/2 inch thick shell. Scallop the edges for visual effect. Fill this shell with:

  • Watermelon balls
  • Strawberries
  • Honeydew melon balls
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Cantaloupe balls
  • Pitted cherries
  • Seedless grapes
  • Persian melon balls

You may use any other fruit in season, except bananas (other squishy fruits like blueberries & the like are not recommended either). Chill together. If the fruit seems dry, pour orange and pineapple juice sweetened with honey on top of everything. Arrange on a large tray; frost edge of melon basket by putting powdered sugar or colored granulated sugar onto it. Arrange your sherbet dishes around melon and have a bowl of whipped cream handy. Enjoy!
