How to give up caffeine, Day 1

Starting today, there is no more caffeinated soda pop in my house. Every day, beginning in college, I have begun my day with a Dr. Pepper or Coca-Cola or the equivalent. I have tried various methods of quitting without success, but today is a new day.

Why this will work:

  • It isn’t conveniently accessible (i.e. in my fridge, in my house, within walking distance, etc).
  • I know it is bad for me, and I do want to give up the habit (essential to this task). If you need motivation, check out Steve Pavlina’s post about “How to Give Up Coffee” and Teeccino’s “Top Reasons to be Caffeine-Free” for good reasons why to give this up.
  • I’m trying it for 30 days because using the 30 day trial method seems easier to me than saying “I will never drink caffeinated soda pop for breakfast again”. I do think that I will feel better and my body will thank me for giving this up, but just in case I’m just miserable for 30 days, I can always rethink this after the 30 day trial is up.
  • I’m restricting it just to soda because I don’t like coffee very much, so I’m not worried about that, and I want to have the option to have other caffeine if I really need it (i.e. too sleepy to drive, miserable headaches, etc.).

I know this topic is a little unrelated to my toddler, sorry about that, but I think a lot of moms depend on that morning caffeine more than they would like, so maybe it will inspire you as well. If nothing else, it keeps me honest and helps me remember when I started this 30 day thing ;).

    Hmmm, looks like my trackback from http://www.thirdworldcounty.us/?p=2158 is stuck in a moderation queue somewhere. I included a comment to the effect that a post on “giving up caffeine” is almost blasphemous (see “O Blessed Holy Caffeine Tree” :-)). Giving up caffeinated pop ought to mean switching to The Holy Brew. :-)
