Actually, the reason this solution works so well in re-hydration is the combination of sugar and salt. When people have dehydrating conditions (like diarrhea), they are unable to maintain healthy hydration within your tissues. Usually, if you drank water with some salt in it, your cells would take up some of the salt and that would help them retain water (it's all about osmotic pressure). However, in some clinical situations (severe diarrhea being one of them), your cells are unable to take up salt and are thus unable to retain water, perpetuating the condition. Glucose (sugar) actually facilitates the absorption of salt into the cells. It does this by activating biomolecular pumps that selectively draw sodium ions into the cell.

So the purpose of the sugar in this solution is NOT to give you energy. It's there to help jump start the flow of electrolytes into your cells, re-hydrating them and thus keeping you hydrated in a situation where you are losing too much fluid.

Baking soda is known as sodium bicarbonate in the science and medical world. When put into solution baking soda "turns into" sodium and bicarbonate ions, both of which are electrolytes. Electrolytes are important because they help the body retain water and are essential for proper nerve and muscle function.

The above recipe will restore the following electrolytes:
Sodium (Na+)
Potassium (K+)
Chloride (Cl-)
Bicarbonate (HCO3-)

The sugar will provide glucose and dextrose. In the body, simple sugars (like glucose and dextrose) are broken down to form ATP molecules which provide energy for cells.

Thanks for the recipe. We had to take care of some baby squirrels this past weekend until a wildlife rehabilitation person could come to get them. After about 12 hours of giving them a few drops of the homemade pedialyte every hour they seemed a lot more lively and were able to eat the recommended Esbilac puppy milk replacer formula.

Thanks!
