Daycare Bear - a free resource for parents

April 2nd, 2007

This is a paid review, written by the Daddy Creature of the Duck Family. If you would like him to review your site, head on over to ReviewMe, sign up and find Lil’ Duck Duck’s listing to request a review.

I would imagine that most of us would like to have all the information we could possibly have about the day care providers in our area in one concise location. The task of flipping through the phone book online or google searching and hoping you get the best seems rather daunting. So, when a site comes along that is adopted by a fast growing community, it makes your life that much easier.

When I was asked to do this review, I was afraid it might be a rather slip-shod search engine with incomplete information. I was both surprised and impressed by the content and design of DayCareBear.com.

When you first log into the site, you are not met with a bevy of annoying ads and pop ups. A simple banner at the top with a navigation bar underneath helps you go right to your information. Also, the main reason you found this site, the daycare search engine, is right in the front. News and job openings for the daycare providers are listed as well as statistics such as “Current openings for children.” With a current traffic rating of 51k a month, it is well suited to handle a large amount of traffic.

The place where this site really shines, is the search results. The information that each provider supplies is based upon a template and you can tell right away by the attention to detail from each provider, which ones are the real deal. Providers list their address, contact number, hours of operation and websites. A list of current openings are listed as well. The other two important things are the Description and Features panel. The Description is a chance for the provider to give you a written description of the things they have to offer, as well as qualifications that are important to them (including rates). The Features panel is a simple checklist that shows if the provider has things like a backyard, playground, residential neighborhood, English and Spanish and the list goes on.

The site also has a Resources section with articles from choosing the right daycare provider - if this is your first time - as well as outside sites that can provide important information regarding your child.

The site is very polished and professional and should become a great portal for both parents and providers if it continues to grow along the same path. I give it 5 clean diapers out of 5.

Ah, here’s the review. When Mama Duck mentioned it, I thought I missed it previously.

It would be better if it allowed for parents to comment on day care centers they have experienced firsthand. But, that would be libelous, I supposed, if the review is negative. Still, there needs to be some way for parents to be able to start reviewing day care centers by the quality of the care their children experienced.
