Night conversations with the toddler

September 17th, 2006

Our life at 3am this morning:
Lil’ Duck: “Mama, mama, mama, maaaaaaammaaaaaaaa…..”

Mama: “Uhhhhhhhhhhhh, what??”

Lil’ Duck: “Mama, mama, mama, ‘ippy, ‘ippy, duck, ‘ifford”

Mama: “Yes, sippy, duck, Clifford, thank you”

Lil’ Duck a few minutes later: “Mama, mama, maaaaammaaaaaa??”

Mama: “WHAT?!!!”

Lil’ Duck: *kisses* “Hugs, Mama, hugs.”

Perhaps making up for the lack of sleep……

Still my sweet baby!!

sweet smile

You still have the kissable chubby cheeks of an adorable baby, the cutest little nose, a big smile, and eyes full of mischief! Even though you are a busy toddler, you always have time for a kiss, hug and cuddling. Your vocabulary is full of “tank you”s and “do welcome” and “peeeeeeeaaassee, mama”s, even when you are mad! I’m so glad that your cute little dimples have remained with you thus far, as they only add to the infectious nature of your smile.

You are so much fun right now, willing to try to say just about anything and always looking for a new game to play. Any mundane chore can be turned into a game with you, whether it be tossing the laundry into the dryer, putting the laundry away (more like a giant stuffing/balancing act on the shelves), or getting dressed for the day (keep-away, anyone??). You can get your own food, throw your trash away, and help clean up your messes, but you still need lots of mommy cuddles and attention. You’re hovering between a sweet little baby and a cute little boy, of which I love both.

Don’t grow up too fast, little guy!

The wonder of the small things - Weeble watching!

September 12th, 2006

weeble watching

“Wow, mama, wow, weebles!!” - a familiar phrase around here these days, especially now with his new Weebles castle. Did you know that if you set a dragon Weeble on the coffee table, it will wobble back and forth while you admire how GREEN it is and ask Mama what on earth those horns are?? When you pick up the weeble, you can feel the smooth “round” of its bottom, the bumpy texture of the face, and the “lumpy” top of the head. The weeble is also perfect for tossing launching across the room at some unsuspecting playmate or Daddy - distance like a ball, pain like a heavy rock! Who knew that a small plastic toy could hold so much excitement and interest in your busy little hands… it almost makes it worth it when I dig out a Weeble that is embedded in the bottom of my foot because it was hiding in a crevice of the living room again….

Other much-loved stuffed animals (and washcloths too!)

August 22nd, 2006

After the latest ducky post, I got so many comments about other beloved creatures that I wanted to share them in a seperate post for everyone to enjoy. As a baby, I had a blanket that I dragged around and bit holes in until it was nothing more than the raggedy edges. I still have it in a bag, but I hope that Ducky won’t look that bad by the time he is retired to a backpack or atop a bed! It’s just wonderful that a small object can bring so much joy - hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did! (more…)

Fire hydrants and happiness

August 21st, 2006
Fire hydrant toddler simple things

Sometimes, it’s the little things in life that bring great pleasure. This old, rusty fire hydrant is one of the last vestiges of the original landscape here. To my eyes, it’s just a rather ugly, large thing that spoils the view of the lake and needs to be repainted. In the little one’s eyes, however, it’s an amazing thing. Every time we walk past it, he emits a “WOW, mama” and has to run up to inspect it. He tries to turn all the nuts and has to feel all the different bumps, the smooth metal and the bumpy rusty spots. The chain around it offers much entertainment as well, with its clanking and texture unlike anything he has felt before.

I would never have really paid attention to this hydrant & certainly would never have thought it an object of interest without the little one. He has helped me to slow down and appreciate things I usually ignore or take for granted, as well as to realize that we don’t need big, fancy, expensive things to entertain us and give us happiness. Of course, this is easier to remember while strolling in the sunshine than when I’m wishing I had a maid for the millionth time, but it’s still a great lesson for me!

Cheerful, friendly, sweet and mostly innocent - my favorite things about Lil’ Duck!

July 29th, 2006

During our errands today, I was thinking about our favorite things (the subject of the Blogging Chicks carnival tomorrow, actually). You see, Lil’ Duck’s favorites are always changing, but I’d always assumed that mine would stay the same or gradually change over time. Well, I think I’m becoming more like Lil’ Duck now, because my favorite things about him are ever-changing now as well.

When we were walking to Starbucks, as we love to do, he was so cheerful and friendly, he smiled at everyone and gave them high-fives, then sat so peacefully on his chair, drinking his soy milk & my strawberries & cream drink, and eating MY cookie and his pumpkin bread (why I even try to get anything for myself is a mystery). So I think this is one of my current favorite things, being able to take him out and just enjoy him - his friendly personality, his joy over every little thing (the “WOW, mama, rocks!!” was especially heartwarming), how BIG he is getting, and so on. He can get his own soy milk, put the straw in, climb up on the chair, then sit and drink it and hold onto it properly. He can walk everywhere with me, and seldom runs away anymore (of course after a while he gets the impish gleam in his eye….). He is so amazed by everything - in the fabric store, he has to feel every texture of fabric and yarn and ribbon, exclaiming it “smooth” or “bumpy” or “wow” - in Office Max, he was amazed by all the “markers” and by the sweet little boy who shared his monkey stickers - and in Wal-mart, he saw a little baby girl and had to make flirty eyes and scrunched up smiley-faces at her.

His daddy said last night that he wanted Lil’ Duck to stay this age forever, and while I can’t entirely agree (especially because there is chocolate on my couch AGAIN), I do wish for him to retain that joy and wonder, and to remain so sweet and friendly and mostly innocent ;). I think all of Lil’ Duck’s favorite things would take several more posts, and as my house is a mess and I need some lunch, I’m going to wait for another day to do that, although I certainly will, both for your enjoyment and for our memories!

WFMW - the lava lamp!

July 26th, 2006

lava lampIt’s been a busy week around here, and we haven’t had much time to just sit down and enjoy each other. Maybe this is why I decided to talk about the lava lamp today, it isn’t a traditional tip or anything, but it really made our evening. You see, a lava lamp is not only a wonderful piece of art and a relaxation tool, but a source of great fascination for Lil’ Duck Duck! We spent a good hour lying on the bed watching it, while he exclaimed “wow! balls! wow! lamp! wow! light! wow!” endlessly. It did eventually help him settle down and relax, making for a nice little bonding moment as we laid on the bed just watching the lava, enjoying each other’s company without the busyness of life getting in the way.

Thursday Thirteen - cute things!

July 19th, 2006

Thirteen cute things the Lil’ Duck does right now:

    1. Pulling up his shirt for us to tickle his “button”.
    2. Bouncing up and down on everything while laughing hysterically.
    3. Baby kisses!!
    4. He copies everything we say now - I said that something DH did was “disgusting” and I hear a little “di-gu-ting!” behind me ;).
    5. He loves to cuddle while taking a shower with me - head on the shoulder and all.
    6. Makes his duck “talk” on the cell phone - “helwo?? helwo?? ah-goo, ga ga *incessant babbling* “o-tay” “bbye-D”.
    7. Asks us to put on his clothes and tries to help us do it.
    8. Tries to tie our shoes, complete with looping and everything!
    9. Is in rapturous delight over the littlest things, like his smoothie this evening.
    10. The morning greeting of “hi mama, hi dada” complete with baby kisses and hugs.
    11. The ducky love pats.
    12. “Sharing” his food with everyone, including the ducks, Clifford, the TV, and anything else that looks like it might have a mouth.
    13. Dancing around to music like a crazy baby.
