Dragon

Lil’ Duck’s daddy has been working a lot of late, but last night he finally couldn’t wait for Daddy any more. He started howling and yelling for “Da-da, car, home, vroom-vroom, play me!”. I tried to distract him, asking him what he would do when Daddy did come home.

Little did I know, I was unleashing upon myself an hour’s worth of “Da-da, daaaaaaa-daaaaaaaa, hug, da-da, kiss, da-da, hide-seek me!” Thankfully, after that hour, the beloved daddy did arrive home, resulting in the happiest hour of the day for the little guy as Daddy played games with him tirelessly from 9:30pm until he fell asleep around 11pm.

Never underestimate how attached a little one can get to his Daddy, even if he isn’t home very often!

Our life at 3am this morning:
Lil’ Duck: “Mama, mama, mama, maaaaaaammaaaaaaaa…..”

Mama: “Uhhhhhhhhhhhh, what??”

Lil’ Duck: “Mama, mama, mama, ‘ippy, ‘ippy, duck, ‘ifford”

Mama: “Yes, sippy, duck, Clifford, thank you”

Lil’ Duck a few minutes later: “Mama, mama, maaaaammaaaaaa??”

Mama: “WHAT?!!!”

Lil’ Duck: *kisses* “Hugs, Mama, hugs.”

Perhaps making up for the lack of sleep……

sweet smile

You still have the kissable chubby cheeks of an adorable baby, the cutest little nose, a big smile, and eyes full of mischief! Even though you are a busy toddler, you always have time for a kiss, hug and cuddling. Your vocabulary is full of “tank you”s and “do welcome” and “peeeeeeeaaassee, mama”s, even when you are mad! I’m so glad that your cute little dimples have remained with you thus far, as they only add to the infectious nature of your smile.

You are so much fun right now, willing to try to say just about anything and always looking for a new game to play. Any mundane chore can be turned into a game with you, whether it be tossing the laundry into the dryer, putting the laundry away (more like a giant stuffing/balancing act on the shelves), or getting dressed for the day (keep-away, anyone??). You can get your own food, throw your trash away, and help clean up your messes, but you still need lots of mommy cuddles and attention. You’re hovering between a sweet little baby and a cute little boy, of which I love both.

Don’t grow up too fast, little guy!

weeble watching

“Wow, mama, wow, weebles!!” – a familiar phrase around here these days, especially now with his new Weebles castle. Did you know that if you set a dragon Weeble on the coffee table, it will wobble back and forth while you admire how GREEN it is and ask Mama what on earth those horns are?? When you pick up the weeble, you can feel the smooth “round” of its bottom, the bumpy texture of the face, and the “lumpy” top of the head. The weeble is also perfect for tossing launching across the room at some unsuspecting playmate or Daddy – distance like a ball, pain like a heavy rock! Who knew that a small plastic toy could hold so much excitement and interest in your busy little hands… it almost makes it worth it when I dig out a Weeble that is embedded in the bottom of my foot because it was hiding in a crevice of the living room again….

After the latest ducky post, I got so many comments about other beloved creatures that I wanted to share them in a seperate post for everyone to enjoy. As a baby, I had a blanket that I dragged around and bit holes in until it was nothing more than the raggedy edges. I still have it in a bag, but I hope that Ducky won’t look that bad by the time he is retired to a backpack or atop a bed! It’s just wonderful that a small object can bring so much joy – hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did! Read more

Fire hydrant toddler simple things

Sometimes, it’s the little things in life that bring great pleasure. This old, rusty fire hydrant is one of the last vestiges of the original landscape here. To my eyes, it’s just a rather ugly, large thing that spoils the view of the lake and needs to be repainted. In the little one’s eyes, however, it’s an amazing thing. Every time we walk past it, he emits a “WOW, mama” and has to run up to inspect it. He tries to turn all the nuts and has to feel all the different bumps, the smooth metal and the bumpy rusty spots. The chain around it offers much entertainment as well, with its clanking and texture unlike anything he has felt before.

I would never have really paid attention to this hydrant & certainly would never have thought it an object of interest without the little one. He has helped me to slow down and appreciate things I usually ignore or take for granted, as well as to realize that we don’t need big, fancy, expensive things to entertain us and give us happiness. Of course, this is easier to remember while strolling in the sunshine than when I’m wishing I had a maid for the millionth time, but it’s still a great lesson for me!
