13 ways to soothe a sick toddler’s cold
Lil’ Duck and I have been sick lately, so here are 13 things that help him to feel better!
- Baby Vapo-rub – he likes to help rub it on his neck and chest, it helps him breathe easier too.
- Warm apple juice with a little lemon and honey – he’s too young for herbal tea yet, but this helps him feel a little better and he thinks he’s getting a special treat
. - Cool washcloths on his forehead if he is feverish – he also likes to suck on them and rub them on himself.
- Popsicles! Not necessarily the healthiest thing but it cheers him up and gets some liquid into him. You could make homemade ones with 100% juice, we buy the Dole juice bars with the fruit chunks.
- Chicken noodle soup – the chunky kind with the penne or the spiral noodles is easy to feed to him.
- Children’s Tylenol Cold – a fever reducer, anti-histamine and decongestant – helps him sleep at night.
- A warm heating pad on my chest with a blanket on top, then him lying face-down on my chest – gives him the benefit of the heating pad without exposing him to too much heat (also helps my chest too
). Only use this if they don’t have a fever, of course, and make sure it’s set on low heat. - Lots of books, music, and new TV shows/movies – he enjoys the Animal Channel, the Backyardigans music, and all of his books. This keeps him entertained but relatively quiet and resting.
- Warm baths with Johnson’s Vapobath – I love it too. I like to run the shower on hot before he gets in there to create some extra steam, keeping the door shut and the air off to lock in the humidity.
- Warm showers with Mommy and a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the air (I just put it on a cotton ball or kleenex and put it up high where he can’t get it) – similar to the vapobath idea, only he prefers showers and it helps unstuff him in the morning.
- Sprite – not so healthy again, but he loves to steal “sips” of mine out of a straw and thinks it’s a special treat. It also helps keep him hydrated and soothes his tummy.
- Smoothies – even when he refuses regular food, he’ll usually drink a smoothie. It’s one of the few ways to get fruit into him, and helps cool him down if he’s feverish.
- Cuddles – lots of cuddles in a nice, warm bed, helps him feel better every time!

Aww, I’m sorry y’all have been sick! But there are a lot of great things you’ve suggested for little ones! Happy TT!
hope hes feeling better soon
i like #12 and 13 too
sounds like he is getting some WONDERFUL treatment!!
That was a good list! With 3 that usually get sick and want soup, I manage to keep some quick macaroni on hand (thinner and smaller elbow type, sold here in Sweden) and I add a cup or 2 to one can of soup and boy does it make the rounds for the sickly trio! ( but after seeing your pantry, I don’t think running out is a possibility at the Duck Pond! ;-P
i think the love and kisses probably works best.
Aww sorry to hear you both arent well! Hope your feeling better soon.
Never thought of warming apple juice! Feel better soon.
Awww, I hope the 2 of you feel better soon!! My TT is up.
Happy Thursday!
I used to cherish the days when both my children and I were sick together….it always meant lots of snuggling!
Hope you both feel better soon!
Aww! Sorry you two have been sick. Lil’ Duck is getting a lot of needed TLC! You’re a great mom!
Happy T13! Thanks for stopping by!
Aww, I remember those days. Now the boys are teenagers and all I get now is “go away, I feel bad.” lol
Sounds like you have this feeling better routine down to a science!
Happy TT!
Cuddles make me feel better too!
Oh poor bears! Both of you! Johnson’s vapo-bath makes EVERYONE feel better. And we do the freezie pops. only 25 calories per pop, and just a few grams of sugar!
Number 4 is good ANY OL’ TIME *giggles*
There are some great tips in there. I always forget the chicken soup!
Thanks for visiting my TT!
Actually the sprite is not so bad for him – my mother used to give me 7-up when I was sick, and I would give it to my girls half strength when they were sick.
Oh, and also my mom would make Jello and give me a cup of the warm jello broth to soothe my throat while the other was gellin in the fridge.
Sounds like lil duckie is quite comforted and pampered…lucky little guy! Can I come be sick at your house? lol!
Awww….sounds very comforting. My Twenty some odds all want their momma when they are sick. Hope both of feel better.
Vapo rub is the best! I’ve used it over the past week myself! Hope Lil Duck feels better soon!
Mine are up here and here!
Although I don’t like when Katie is sick, it is the cuddles that really make it worthwhile. Sick together, I don’t know what we’d do. Cute list and I hope you both are back up and feeling better soon. -M
Awww. So sorry you’re both under the weather. One of my girls is feverish (due to teething) so I hear you about the comfort.
She’s too little for a lot of the things you suggested. But I am using the washcloth idea.
Thanks.
I hope everyone is feeling better soon.
Hope you two get to feeling better. I hate it when boo is sick, but God allows that time to re-coop and look to Him to provide. Thanks for the great ideas!
My Birthday TT is up!
Great list. Our Bean is going through the sniffles right now. She’s on the road to recovery, I believe. She’s getting her molars and it has thrown her entire poor little system off.
She does not like showers or baths, so we can’t comfort her with those items. She freaks out in the tub. Hopefully it’s just a phase. ??? Maybe Mommy and Daddy should have some popsicles for comfort.
Don’t you just hate sick kiddies, popsicles were a life saver for me!! Great informative list.
Oh I love cuddles too when I’m not feeling well. I hope both of you get better soonest. Cheers.
All the best tricks in this list! I’m home with a sick child today. Not fun. Thanks for stopping by
Warm apple juice with lemon and honey sounds great. Hope you both get to feeling better soon!
Poor little guy (and you!); hope you’re both feeling better soon!

Kisses and cuddles are the best! My son loves Chicken noodle, it has to be Campbell’s. I’ll have to try warm apple juice! Thanks for the tip!
Happy Thursday!

When I get a cold I’m coming to your place! That is a great reading experience. My T13 is up at Dane Bramage It is the “Quotes and Epigrams” Edition.
DOH! It’s DANE Bramage! I screwed up my own name. How embarrassing!
Oh no, sorry to hear you guys have been sick. But, he has got to be feeling better after all of that wonderful TLC, he just has to be!
Hope you are both much better very soon.
Have a good day, and thanks for stopping by my T13 earlier

My girls love the songs by the Backyardigans too.
Your son is blessed to have such a caring Mommy!
My Big Boy likes a lot of these things when he’s not feeling good, too. Lately…
Great list! May I add just one more: all natural ginger ale (I think the brand is Knudsen) for upset stomachs/nausea. It tastes good, works great!
Feel better little one.
Sounds like a good list to keep everyone feeling ok while their sick!! Hope you all feel better!
I think with a great Mom like you you’ll both be better in no time. All the vapos sound really great and the idea with the heating pad is awesome.
